CONSCIOUS & UNCONSCIOUS MINDS

A simple explanation

Almost everyone these days is aware of the conscious and subconscious minds, and the important work that hypnotherapy can do in bringing about changes with addictions and unwanted behavioural and personality traits, including illness.

For the conscious mind to operate it always has to refer to the information contained within the unconscious mind; so any mis-information in there can cause problems.

There is now overwhelming evidence that our minds, via our unconscious thought patterns, create our reality.

The human mind can be likened to the proverbial iceberg in-as-much as that we are only aware of 5% of it on a conscious level. The other 95% is unconscious, or hidden. This has major implications if the two parts are not in harmony.

For instance, a person wanting to lose weight or give up smoking; if there is discord in the unconscious with the conscious decision, the 5% willpower of the conscious mind is powerless against the 95% of the unconscious mind.

For this reason, it is important that we understand that if we wish to achieve maximum potential in health – wealth – relationships, the two minds must be brought into harmony.

A more technical explanation

Carl Jung (forefather of modern day hypnotherapy, 1875 - 1961) discovered three levels to the human mind:-

Conscious....the "thinking " mind. Awake when we are but sleeps when we do.

Subconscious ....the "feeling" mind. It is responsible for running the autonomic systems of the body – temperature – blood pressure – heart rate etc. Awake 24/7, it is a database of information; it knows everything that has ever happened to us from the moment of birth until the moment of death.

Superconscious.....the "connective" mind. That which connects every single human being to each other

Through his studies carried out in the early to mid 20th century, Jung realised that for the conscious mind to be able to think and rationalise it had to have somewhere to "dip" into for information; that somewhere was the subconscious mind. He therefore concluded that for the purposes of therapy, to change unwanted behavioural traits and patterns, it was only necessary to speak and work with the subconscious mind.

The reasoning behind this conclusion was that because the subconscious mind never sleeps and cannot think, it is liable to misinterpret some of the information that it is constantly collecting; it is this misinterpretation that leads to problems.

However in 1990, David Oates who had discovered, and been researching and working with Reverse Speech™ since 1983, found that although most of Jung's theories were true, there were in fact other levels of the mind to be taken into consideration. He re-listed them to look like this:-

1.Conscious....the "thinking " mind. Awake when we are but sleeps when we do.

2.Subconscious ....Responsible for running the autonomic systems of the body – temperature – blood pressure – heart rate etc. Awake 24/7

3.Unconscious.....the "feeling" mind, unconscious thoughts and motives - behavioural patterns and personality structures. It is a database of information, knowing everything that has ever happened to us from the moment of birth until the moment of death.

4.Collective Unconscious.....the "connective" mind. Contains universal knowledge - information outside one’s own knowledge and experience.

5.Spirit.......Details matters of the soul and is a voice of guidance and insight.

The conscious mind remains unchanged; and levels 2 – 5, he collectively calls the unconscious mind. This simply means that these parts are hidden from our awareness. During Reverse Speech™, all of these levels can be heard and worked with. It has been found that problems can arise from levels 2, 3 or 4, with level 5 stating the results of these problems on the soul itself; fortunately it also can give resolutions to these issues. This is a major step forward.
